Safety isn’t something that teens like to think about. Immature brain development, specifically of the prefrontal cortex, makes teens more vulnerable to feeling distress when pushed by their peers to perform risky behaviors. This means that they’re more likely than adults to engage in risky behaviors even though they understand the risk. So how can parents who are handing over keys to their teens teach them to be safe?

Safety can be a difficult idea for teens to grasp. Sometimes, they just can’t seem to “get” the realities behind the risk of texting while driving, driving under the influence, and other similar risky driving behaviors. Parents may be able to reach their teens on a deeper level by having a discussion of the potential consequences of their behaviors. This guide is intended to give an overview of the laws and consequences that affect teen drivers.

In fact, the Association for Safe International Road Travel estimates that every year, 1.3 million people are killed in road crashes, and an additional 20-50 million are injured. Those are serious numbers, and show the reasons that safety needs to be a top priority.

Each season brings its own risks and dangers. In the winter, you face the danger of black ice and slippery roads, but did you know that wet leaves on the road in the fall are just as dangerous? In the spring, you must watch for potholes, and in the summer, the risk is with the heat. Having a safety checklist you can turn to season by season to keep yourself and your family safe will help you enjoy the freedom of the road with minimal risk.

Here you will find a comprehensive list of driving and garage safety concerns for each season.

Did you know that half of all teens will be involved in a car crash before they graduate high school? This fact from the Governors Highway Safety Association is sobering for parents. Teaching your teenager to be safe as a driver doesn’t start with teaching them how to merge safely and stop at stoplights properly. It starts with teaching them how to be safe in the driveway, garage and parking lots.

As an adult, you likely don’t think any more about all of the safety precautions that apply to these areas of driving, but your teenager needs to be carefully taught them – it’s not in their muscle memory yet. That’s why we’ve created this guide that will help you guide your teen drive in all of the safety tips and tricks they need to keep their car and its occupants safe, even at the most basic level. Here are some safety measures you need to teach your teen to ensure safety at all times, even in your own garage.

And by now, you’ve probably heard time and again how important defensive driving is.

What you might not know, however, is the importance of keeping your car properly maintained and knowing basic automotive repair, to help prevent you from being stranded along the road and to help you avoid hefty repair bills.

Parenthood means getting to celebrate tons of milestones with your kids. Those first steps. Those first days of school. That first boyfriend or girlfriend. These are celebrated with gusto, and a box of tissues handy for the sentimental among us. Yet there’s one milestone that most parents feel largely unprepared for: teenage driving.

Giving your teen the keys to his or her first car is a moment that you may face with fear and trepidation—and for good reason. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that a total of 2,715 teen drivers died in motor vehicle crashes in 2015, and 62 percent of those who died were the drivers of the vehicles. In addition, 55 percent of teenage passengers killed that year were passengers in cars driven by another teen. Simply put, teen drivers are a pretty big risk on the road. When that teen driver is your child, you are going to feel especially nervous.

But before you threaten to lock them away for their own safety—there’s good news.
